Building Your Own Immune SHIELD

silver shield

I believe the best way to harness the power of our immune system is by providing nutrients and supplements that make it strong and prepared for this changing season.  In the past two years, I have attended a several seminars with Dr. Gordon Pedersen, P h. D.  in Toxicology and master’s degree in Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness. His investigation and scientific research on Silver Shield is at the top and most updated.

Silver Shield w/Aqua Sol (18 ppm) (4 fl. oz)Liquid Silver Shield with sol technology is the best choice for viral and bacterial infections as well as for any epidemic outbreaks. The gel is also necessary because as Dr. Pederson explains, most the diseases are transferred by hand contact. Silver Shield Gel used on hands will help prevent as much as 70 percent of all contagious diseases.

What is Silver Shield? Silver Shield consists of millions of microscopic silver particles electrically charged and suspended in water. It is used as a natural disinfectant and antiseptic and is known to kill a wide variety of harmful microorganisms.  This suspended solution of silver with Aqua Sol technology is truly a shield for everyone.  It is a powerful immune protector for children as well.   Dr. Gordon explains that this patented silver sol technology features an engineered nano particle of specific size and resonance that penetrates and neutralizes pathogens (virus, bacteria, fungus, yeast, etc) continuously.

This patented form of silver supplement Dr. Gordon says is safe enough to consume in a daily regimen while powerful enough to destroy the causes of many serious diseases like strep throat, staph, pneumonia, salmonella, dysentery, and yeast. The Shielding effect of silver is like your first line of defense, protecting the most vulnerable parts of the outside and inside of the body from contagious disease.

Dr. Pedersen’s research affirms that Silver Shield kills 99.9% of most bacteria, yeasts and molds within 10 minutes. Continues to kill pathogens with catalytic, not chemical action. Can be used internally as well as topically. It has multiple mechanisms of action to ensure its efficacy. It is non-toxic and safe at recommended levels. “To date, there are no potentially pathogenic bacteria tested that… {this} product has not killed”- Dr. R. Leavitt, Professor of Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Brigham Young University.

Claims Found in the United States Patent # 7135195: Silver Sol has hundreds of approved claims in the patent. Some of the most significant pathogens killed include: MRSA, SARS, malaria, anthrax, gram negative bacteria, gram positive bacteria, nosocomial infections, viruses including hepatitis B, HIV, influenza, and over 143 individual uses covering bacteria, viruses and fungus. Silver Sol can be used as an internal and external disinfectant because it passes through the body unchanged, so it produces no dangerous metabolites and is cleared 99% by the next day. Uses: Viral infections, fevers, bacterial infections, hand disinfectant, sinus congestion, hay fever, ear infections, rashes, asthma, pneumonia and many other ailments (“ A Fighting Chance” Dr. Gordon Pedersen).

The A-B-C’s of a Body’s Vibrant Health – Part I

food-health

Through the years I have learned how important it is to start activating our bodies as a first step to achieve self-healing and vibrant health. To be able to do this process three different body systems are involved. Steven Horne and Carl Robinson, both advocates of natural healing and Master Herbalists describe it as follows: “All cells need a supply of oxygen to fan the spark of life (energy), a supply of nutrients (fuel to produce energy and heat) and a constant removal of waste materials (which utilizes water). These three needs are represented in the body by the three major systems that permeate almost every tissue in the body. They are the circulatory system, the lymphatic system and the nervous system. The circulatory system supplies oxygen and nutrients to every cell in the body, thus it is the source of fuel for the life process. The lymphatic system removes much of the waste from around the cells, so it represents the need of all cells for constant removal of wastes. Finally, the nervous system provides electrical stimulus to all body tissues to promote healing and repair. It is the system that is supplying the spark of life to regulate and control all of the life processes”.

Activation is one of the four steps to natural healing introduced by Ed Millet, but has been greatly expanded by Steve Horne and Carl Robinson. A stands for Activate. That means we have to start the spark of life to stimulate the process of energy within the body. B stands for Build. That means we have to supply the body with the nutrients it needs. Finally, C stands for Cleanse. This means we have to get the waste material out of the system.

The great activating systems in our body are the nervous system and the glandular system, as they regulate the life process and control the body’s energies. Our nerves and glands respond to our thoughts and our moods, thus the principle of activation must involve our thoughts and our emotions as well. Positive thoughts and joyful feelings enhance the healing power of our body, while negative thoughts and dark feelings depress our body’s ability to heal.

Good nutrition and emotional healing make the activating process more successful. Living foods contain strong life energy; they provide more than chemical substances to the body. Horne explains that living foods also contain a source of life energy or light. They “enlighten” and “enliven” our minds and bodies. The more we refine and process a food, the more de-vitalized or de-natured it becomes. Refining food causes it to lose its vital energy or vitality. This loss of light or vital energy causes the nature of the food to break down. The food becomes “dead” and cannot fully participate in the life process.

According to Horne, when we develop positive attitudes and emotions through different paths like positive affirmations in present tense, deep breathing, visualization, aromatherapy, homeopathics and enzymes among other techniques, we provide an electrical stimulus through the nervous system that activates the healing energy of the tissues.

Enzymes are the “spark plugs” of the life process. Every biological function of the body is controlled or aided by the action of enzymes. Raw foods contain these enzymes as do many of the cultured foods (raw yogurt, sauerkraut, etc.) However, enzymes are destroyed by heat, so a diet consisting primarily of cooked and processed foods is lacking in natural enzymes.

Proactazyme Plus (100 caps)We can find the major plant enzymes to supplement our daily nutrition in the enzymatic combination Proactazyme. Proactazyme contains Protease, an enzyme used to digest proteins. Lipase, an enzyme that breaks down fats. Amylase and Glucoamylase, enzymes that supplement the secretions of the saliva and aid the digestion of starches in the food we eat. Cellulase and Pectinase, which help process plant fibers like cellulose. Food Enzymes, according to the Herballure Hart book, Food Enzymes are a broad spectrum digestive enzyme supplement formulated to aid digestion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins and ease digestive problems. Food Enzymes can also improve the absorption of vitamins and minerals, help maintain normal pH levels, detoxify the colon, and stimulate the growth of healthy intestinal bacteria.

Magnesium A Magnificent Mineral

swiss-chard

Magnesium is usually referred to as a “macro mineral,” which means that our food must provide us with hundreds of milligrams of magnesium every day. (The other macro minerals that all humans must get from food are calcium, phosphorus, sodium: nutrient, potassium, and chloride).

Inside our bodies, magnesium is found mostly in our bones (60-65%), but also in our muscles (25%), and in other cell types and body fluids. Like all minerals, magnesium cannot be made in our body and must therefore be plentiful in our diet in order for us to remain healthy.

Magnesium is sometimes regarded as a “smoothie” mineral, since it has the ability to relax our muscles. Our nerves also depend upon magnesium to avoid becoming overexcited, and this aspect of magnesium links this mineral to maintenance of healthy blood pressure. Many chemical reactions in the body involve the presence of an enzyme.

Enzymes are special proteins that help trigger chemical reactions. Over 300 different enzymes in the body require magnesium in order to function. For this reason, the functions of this mineral are especially diverse. Magnesium is involved in the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. It helps genes function properly. Some fuels cannot be stored in our muscle cells unless adequate supplies of magnesium are available.

The metabolic role of magnesium is so diverse that it is difficult to find a body system that is not affected by magnesium deficiency. Our cardiovascular system, digestive system, nervous system, muscles, kidneys, liver, hormone-secreting glands, and brain all rely on magnesium for their metabolic function.  Magnesium helps to relax your nerves and muscles, it builds and strengthen bones and keeps your blood circulating smoothly. Magnesium and calcium act together to help regulate the body’s nerve and muscle tone.

According to health experts signs of magnesium deficiency can vary widely, some of them include: chronic stress, anxiety, aggression, loss of appetite, cramps, depression, fatigue, hearing loss, impotence, insomnia, tremors, arrhythmia, increased heart rate, headaches, elevated blood pressure, softening and weakening bones, and imbalanced blood sugar levels.

Magnesium is found naturally in whole grains, Brazil nuts, almonds, and leafy vegetables such as spinach. Chocolate is also a good source of magnesium (and magnesium deficiency may help explain why some people have intense cravings for chocolate). Other foods that are high in magnesium are pumpkin seeds, Swiss chard, soy beans salmon, raw sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, black beans, navy beans, mangoes

Magnesium is also very important for pregnant women to provide the relaxing element for the baby in all stages.

Magnesium Complex (100 caps) (ko)You can also find high quality magnesium in supplements like Magnesium Complex. A Herballure archive describes Magnesium Complex as a formula that offers two easily-absorbed and bioavailable (ready to be utilized by the body) forms of magnesium-magnesium citrate and magnesium malate. Magnesium Complex contains these two different forms of chelated magnesium to ensure optimal absorption.

Pantothenic Acid – a Very Amazing Vitamin

allergy-illness

Most of us have very busy lives and deal with a good amount of stress on a regular basis. To keep up with this busy pace, your body requires a constant supply of B-vitamins. One particular B-Vitamin called pantothenic acid or Vitamin B5 is stored in the adrenal glands (your stress support glands) and is readily burned up under stress.

Whenever we use up a nutrient at a high rate, we create deficiencies. This imbalance creates symptoms which are manifested in the body. A lack of pantothenic acid creates a variety of symptoms one of which seems to be nasal congestion and increased sensitivities to allergens. Our son Tyler has had trouble with nasal congestion for over a year. He did not respond well to any of the allergy/sinus formulas I tried him on. The congestion was worse at night and made it hard for him to breathe when he slept. He also got very congested at school due to all the allergens in the air. I put him on 250 mg. of pantothenic acid at bedtime and his congestion cleared up and he was able to breathe clearly again. I give him an additional 250 mg. before going to school as well.

Here are results of a couple clinical observations:

Pantothenic acid supplementation may reduce allergic reactions, especially allergic rhinitis. Clinical observation: The majority of over 100 patients with allergic rhinitis who took 250mg of pantothenic acid twice daily had almost instant relief. [Martin W. On treating allergic disorders. Townsend Letter for Doctors Aug/Sept 1991: pp.670-1]

Clinical observation: A physician with allergies took 100mg at bedtime and found that his nasal stuffiness cleared in less than 15 minutes and that he stopped awakening at 4 or 5 AM with cough and mucous secretion. He subsequently found that many of his patients also noted significant relief of nasal congestion from supplementation. [Crook WG. Ann Allergy 49: pp.45-46, 1987]

Here are other symptoms of pantothenic acid (B5) deficiency…

  • A lack of B5 tends to cause an allergy or sensitivity to citrus fruit. This allergic reaction creates an intense craving for these foods. I often find that people low in B5 will crave orange juice. They often find they have to clear their throat frequently after drinking it. Other foods in the citrus allergy group are lemons, lime, tangerines, grapefruit, pineapple, tomatoes and cantaloupe. When the levels of B5 improve in the body the cravings for these foods decrease as well as the sensitivity to them.
  • Because pantothenic acid(B5) plays such a role in the health of the adrenal glands we find that a lack of this nutrient causes people to have excessive worry. People low in B5 will worry about little things that normally should not bother them, and they can worry excessively over bigger things. In addition B5 has been shown to be very useful in reducing the frequency and intensity of panic attacks.
  • B5 plays an important role in the production of hydrochloric acid (HCL) the acid made in your stomach to help digest proteins. When people are under high stress they deplete this vitamin tend to have a lot of digestive problems and food allergies.
  • B5 is needed for the conversion of proteins and carbohydrates into energy, so it is common to have low energy when B5 is deficient. Adrenal Fatigue is caused by excessive stress over a long period of time, combined with inadequate nutrition to support the stress. This condition is greatly benefited by the addition of B5. The formula Adrenal Support (#1507-0) supplies pantothenic acid (B5) along with nutrients needed to rebuild and strengthen tired adrenal glands.
  • A lack of pantothenic acid is attributed to premature graying of the hair. Supplementing with this vitamin has been known to reduce or reverse premature graying.
  • The use of pantothenic acid is considered valuable in arthritis. One study found that the pantothenic acid content of the blood of persons suffering from rheumatoid arthritis was lower than that in healthy individuals. In some cases, 1,000 mg administered daily was found effective in reducing the pain caused by arthritis.
  • Vitamin B5 has been found to be very helpful in reducing acne. B5 works in the body with CoeEnzyme-A in the role of fat metabolism. Fats that don’t get broken down properly get deposited in your sebaceous (oil) glands and get secreted as sebum (oil). Oil is a fat in liquid form. One of the causes of acne is from the bacteria in your pores that feeds on this excess oil. Supplementing with pantothenic acid decreases this excess oil and helps clear up the acne. I have seen good results with this with our teenage son Harlow whom I gave 250 mg. twice daily to. His skin started clearing up significantly over the first 2 weeks of use.
  • Pantothenic acid helps the immune system to fight infections
  • A deficiency symptom of Vitamin B5 can cause burning foot syndrome in which a person feels a lack of feeling in their feet accompanied by burning pain and fatigue.
  • Pantothenic acid is very helpful for those who suffer from low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) because it strengthens the adrenal glands which play a role in balancing insulin levels.

Pantothenic Acid (250 mg) (100 caps) (ko)Pantothenic acid (B5) is readily available in whole foods but destroyed easily when foods are processed. B5 is water soluble so it is depleted in the body by excessive coffee drinking as well. Because it is easily lost in the urine it is best to divide your pantothenic acid dose into several smaller doses throughout the day. Doses of 250 mg. twice daily and up to 500 mg. 3 times daily have been used most commonly for the conditions listed above. Nature’s Sunshine has Pantothenic Acid (250 mg) in capsules (# 1640-2). Whenever you take any B-vitamin it is recommended to take a full B-complex or multiple vitamin containing the B’s along with your additional B5. I recommend the B-Complex formula called Nutri-Calm (#1617-3) for those of you under stress that also have nervous tension. When deciding on your daily dose of pantothenic acid make sure to check how much you are getting from your B-complex of multiple as well.

Parasites: The Unwanted Guests

liver-fluke-parasites

Are you ready for a good spring cleansing? Our bodies like the seasons have changes as well, and it is up to us to help with these changes in a healthy way. A parasite cleanse is a clever way to start.

Many people assume parasitic infections in humans are only a problem in underdeveloped countries; however they also pose a serious problem in the United States. There are, in fact, many species of parasites that show no socioeconomic boundaries and can be found in all climates. In fact, researchers say today that Americans today are host to more than 130 different kinds of parasites ranging from microscopic organisms to tapeworm.

A parasite is an organism that lives off the host (the host being us). They live a parallel life inside our bodies. They feed off our energy, our own cells or the food we eat. They even feed off the supplements we take. A smart parasite lives without being detected. If it were detected it would be eradicated. They are intelligent in their ability to survive and reproduce. If you learn to read your body’s signals you will be able to recognize their presence. No organ is immune from their infestation.

Chronic fatigue, immune dysfunction, diarrhea, gas and bloating, allergies and nervousness are some of signs of parasites in adults. Children more likely have worms if blisters appear on the lower lip (inside mouth), if they grind their teeth or are restless at night, or if they frequently wipe their nose or itch their rectum. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 90 percent of all parasitic infections in the U.S. are by single-celled protozoans.

Parasites thrive in environments where yeast or fungus are present, acid levels are elevated, and many other toxins are prevalent. The best and safest way to eliminate parasites is to use natural herbal and homeopathic supplements. A parasite cleanse should be done twice a year for relatively healthy individuals and four times a year for people with lowered immune system response. Also, individuals that have pets in the home should consider de-worming their pets and doing a parasite purge four to five times a year.

Para Cleanse (10 Day)It is important to detect, eliminate and repair. A parasite program should be for approximately six weeks, since the parasites go through an incubation period of between three and four weeks. My favorite is Para-cleanse Para-cleanse. Repeat the cleanse in another six weeks to ensure all parasites, especially those that may have avoided initial supplement exposure, are dealt with. Then be sure to rebuild and repair by balancing pH levels in the digestive tract by eating a lot of green vegetables, also you may supplement the friendly flora with a good probiotic like Probiotic 11. Support the digestive system with Food Enzymes and replenish fiber in the colon with Nature’s Three or Psyllium Hulls.

It combines helpful herbal ingredients in a gentle effective blend that includes Black Walnut ATC Concentrate, Herbal Pumpkin, Cell Reg and Paw Paw. This program helps to cleanse and detoxify unwanted foreign invaders. It is conveniently packed in individual servings.

Creating a Natural Vacation Travel Kit

Healthy Family Travel

Vacation time brings pictures to our minds of relaxing, having fun and being more active. We travel to exciting remote places or to hidden treasures near our home, taking time to relax, have fun or just clear our mind. One thing we don’t want during this time is unexpected health concerns to hinder our special time away. I would like to share with you some helpful natural products that can you can take along to make your trip more enjoyable, or to be prepared for unexpected illness or injury during your stay. Preparing your natural travel kit depends a lot on where or how long you will be traveling. Look over the list below, and consider your individual or families health concerns during travel. You can choose from the suggestions below to put together your own personal travel kit.

Digestive problems: Whenever we change our routines or the type of food we eat, we can expect our digestive system to speak up about it. Irritable bowel, constipation, and digestive upsets are not unusual during travel. Luckily we have several formulas that can help…

Digestive enzymes help to ensure good digestion of our food during travel so we do not experience digestive upsets that can upset our travel fun. Proactazyme Plus (#1525-0) helps to digest carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It is a vegetarian formula of plant enzymes that helps give our body the extra support we need to digest new unfamiliar foods. Take 1-2 per meal.

Papaya Mint (70 chewable tabs)Lactase Plus (#1655-2) helps to digest dairy products, take 1 with a meal that contains dairy if this food is hard to digest for you.

Food Enzymes (#1836-9) is a stronger full spectrum digestive enzyme with hydrochloric acid and bile salts. It really helps to digest heavy meals and meats. Take it along when you go for that fancy steak dinner! 1-2 per meal.

Prefer a chewable? Papaya mints chewable enzymes are great to chew after a meal. They have a fresh natural mint flavor which freshens the breath and they work great to assist in digesting all food groups. Chew 1-2 tablets after a meal.

Constipation: a sluggish colon is very common during travel the formula LBSII (#990-1) is a good laxative formula that will stimulate peristalsis in the colon. For those prone to have spastic bowel, use the formula LB-X (#1226-3) instead. This formula has the bowel stimulants along with powerful muscle relaxing herbs to stop spasms in the colon. Take 1-2 capsules of either formula in the evening with your dinner meal. Take more often if needed.

Irritable bowel: New foods, or travel stress can cause our digestive tract to over react resulting in loose stools or diarrhea. Intestinal Soothe and Build (#1106-2) formula will soothe the irritated digestive tract, break up gas, and relax intestinal spasms. Take 3-4 capsules with a glass of water 1-2 times daily as needed.

Parasites: Herbal Pumpkin Combination (#915-2) is Anti-parasitic and antibacterial herbal formula. This formula would be good to take during travel as it contains anti-parasitic herbs which are antiseptic as well. This formula has mild laxative properties for occasional irregularity during travel. I like this formula as it also contains slippery elm, marshmallow and mullein which soothes and heals the intestinal lining in cases of loose stool. This formula is gentle enough that people could take 2-3 twice a day if they are prone to sluggish colon during travel, and in the case of suspected parasites, you can take 6-9 daily.

Stress-J (2 fl. oz) (ko)High Stress: Perhaps you’re nervous about travel, or need to stay a few days with someone you not entirely comfortable with. Stress-J (#1084-1) can help to calm your nerves, improve your ability to handle stress, and improve your sleep. SUMA Combination (#1088-5) is an adaptogen formula that helps you handle stress, and boosts your immune system, Nutri-Calm (#4803-3) tablet is a B-Complex formula with Vitamin C in a base of calming herbs.

Sleep: For adjusting your sleep cycles due to change of time, or for jet lag take 1-2

Melatonin Extra (#2830-4) 30 minutes before you go to sleep. This natural compound helps to restore your natural sleep rhythm, and promotes a restful night’s sleep.

Herbal sleep (#940-8): Enhances your ability to fall asleep, relaxes your nerves and muscle tension. If you have trouble sleeping well when you travel, take 3 – 4 capsules at bedtime. This formula will not cause you to feel groggy in the morning like over the counter or prescription sleep aids.

Travel Sickness: the herb Ginger (#300-6) is well known for helping with motion sickness. Take 3-4 capsules ½ hour before travel and then as needed. Ginger is a very warm herb, it sometimes feels hot in the stomach if you are not used to it. So if you plan to use it to reduce motion sickness during travel you should start using it ahead of time to get used to it. I suggest you take 1-2 ginger before meals for a week prior to travel. Ginger helps to improve digestion so taking it before a meal is very beneficial.

Endurance while Exercising: Target Endurance (#2809-8) a unique formula designed for those who are partaking in strenuous physical activity. Provides nutrients to increase stamina and endurance, and improve oxygen uptake by the cells. Taken before your workout, hike or bicycle ride, it will really improve your performance and reduce fatigue. Take 3-4 capsules prior to physical activity.

Recovery (14.8 oz)Recovery drink mix (#3662-2) is a great alternative to sports drinks. This well balanced orange flavored drink is packed full of electrolytes and energy producing nutrients. Drink this while exercising or playing sports and you won’t believe how well it works. It is a real energy saver for those who have to work outside in the heat every day as well. It comes in a convenient powdered form so you can mix it up as you need it and don’t have to carry along so many bottles.

The dreaded Poison Ivy!!!! Nature has provided us with some great cures for all types of pests around us, and poison ivy is not exception. The first thing to have on hand is Lemon essential oil (#3908-2). We have found that if you apply lemon oil to the little itchy bumps that first appear from the poison ivy, that you can dry them up and stop the itch in a couple applications. Only apply the oil just to the bumps. Often we don’t figure out we are covered in poison ivy until we have already broke the skin from itching so badly. In this case the pure lemon oil will irritate the condition and burn the skin too much, so a second plan is needed. Keep on hand the following ingredients: Pure Aloe Vera Gel (#1679-2), Eucalyptus essential oil (#3904-9) and Roman Chamomile essential oil (#3901-6)

Place a teaspoon of aloe vera in the palm of your hand; add 5 drops Roman Chamomile and 3 drops eucalyptus oil. Blend together and apply to any itchy areas of poison ivy that you have already itched and broke the skin. You can add a couple drops of the lemon oil to this as well. Do not use the lemon oil if the skin is very inflamed. These oils are also great for other things, the combination of Eucalyptus and Roman Chamomile are great for repelling insects, rubbing on sore muscles, or rubbing on the chest to loosen a tight chest and relieve congestion from a cold.

Roman Chamomile is wonderful to help you fall a sleep, mix a few drops into some of the aloe vera and rub it onto your feet and back just before bed. It is a great for relaxing muscles, and I have used it to relax the abdomen and colon in babies and children suffering from colic or gas. A few drops mixed in the aloe and rubbed on the abdomen and back will work wonders in minutes in most cases. It helps the child go quickly back to sleep as well.Bottle w/Sprayer (2 fl. oz)

Insect bites: Tea Tree Oil (#1777-1), repels insects as well as killing germs and promoting healing.

Natural bug spray recipe: 15 drops tee tree oil, 10 drops lavender, 5 drops eucalyptus oil. Mix in 2 ounce spritzer bottle (3936-9) with water. Spray on body to repel insects.

Cuts & abrasions if there is an accident Tea tree oil kills germs, fights infections. Lavender essential oil (#3907-8), and aloe vera gel (#1679-2) heals and soothes burns and injuries.

Immune Strengthener: Chinese Trigger Immune TCM (#1034-0) Trigger Immune provides essential nutrients which help to strengthen and restore the immune system. This formula also helps to build endurance and counter-act the effects of stress on the body there by increasing energy levels. Take 1 TCM concentrate capsule twice daily starting 2-4 weeks before travel and continue on through your vacation time.

Whole Food Antioxidant (90 soft chews)We all know that eating more fruits and vegetables help to improve our health. They are high in immune building antioxidants and phyto-nutrients. During travel it is often hard to get enough fruits and vegetables, for some of us it is hard to do on a regular basis as well. If you want to improve your antioxidant intake and boost your immune system strength I’d like to suggest you try the new Children’s Whole food Antioxidant chewables (#3344-9). This supplement may have been promoted for children but I love them as do many of my clients! They taste like fruit flavored gummy bears and each 3 chewables pack the antioxidant power of 2 average servings of fruits or vegetables! What an easy way to add more antioxidants while traveling or during a busy day.

Another great immune booster and builder are probiotics. The human body relies on a healthy level of probiotics for numerous functions, including metabolizing foods, absorbing nutrients, maintaining a proper balance of intestinal flora and for healthy immune function. These benefits help counter the effects of food allergies or sensitivities, improve bowel function, and in regard to travel they are particularly helpful if we run into a bout of food poisoning while traveling. I’d again like to suggest the children’s chewable Probiotic Power (#3346-7) for travel. This formula provides eleven different strains of probiotics to address a wide range of intestinal needs. Each tablet provides a billion beneficial bacteria. These chewable probiotics do not need to be refrigerated so they are perfect for travel (however you should store them indoors in a cool place). Children take 1-2 tablets daily; Adults can take 2-4 tablets daily. If you suffer from suspected food related illness, I take 2 tablets every few hours and it really helps lesson the symptoms and speed recovery. For acute severe illness after food exposure see a doctor immediately.

Infections and Viruses:

Silver Shield w/Aqua Sol (18 ppm) (4 fl. oz)For a powerful infection and virus fighter to have on hand while traveling, Silver Shield (#4274-1) is one of my top choices. Use as a preventative in small doses, or as a remedy for fighting infections both internal and external. Caught at the first signs of an infection most of the time it will minimize the symptoms and shorten the duration of illness, so you can still enjoy your trip.

Silver shield gel (#4950-1) can be applied for topically for abrasions, cold sores, staph infections, or ringworm. You can use a couple drops of the liquid in the ear for ear infections, or directly in the eye for eye infections, or after you get something in your eye to help prevent infection. It may sting for a second, but then the eye feels better. Use in a douche for yeast infections. For suspected viral or bacterial infections, take 1 tsp. 3 times daily for adults (including children).

Echinacea/Goldenseal formula (#835-2) is a good formula to carry along in case of illness. The herbs in this formula address both bacterial and viral infections. If you feel achy and tired like you are coming down with something you can take 2-3 capsules every few hours to boost your immune system and fight invaders.

Seasonal Defense (#806-6) is a great formula to take along on vacations. It is a great formula to take at the onset of head cold symptoms. The herbs in this formula have been used for hundreds of years in China India and Scandinavian countries to treat upper respiratory tract infection, fever and sore throat and as a preventative herb for the common cold. These herbs seem to work as a potent stimulant of the immune system. They increase white blood cell activity to help the body fight infections. Take 2-4 capsules as needed every 3-4 hours.

Allergies: When you travel to a new area you often encounter pollens and other allergens you may not be accustomed to. If you tend to get seasonal allergies you need to travel prepared when you go to new places. HistaBlock (776-1) is a great allergy formula that has anti-histamine properties. It will help the itchy eyes, and runny nose associated with allergies. Are you staying with someone who has pets and you are bothered by them? HistaBlock is a great formula for cat and dog allergies. Take 2-4 capsules several times daily as needed.

ALJ (#774-3) is another great formula that helps relieve allergy symptoms. If you tend to get plugged up and congested from your allergies, then this formula may be the best choice. I always have both formulas on hand and often combine them. Each family member or exposure to different allergens may call for using a different formula. ALJ is also available in liquid form, for children.

Sinus Support (#1250-3) is another great allergy formula which helps to fight sinus infections as well. It is particularly good if you are traveling somewhere that has a different climate from the one you live in. The formula contains burdock which helps your hypothalamus gland adapt to the change in climate, which helps stop the drainage in your throat common with weather changes.

I know 3 allergy formulas can be confusing, they are each a little different and developed by different herbalists. But since peach person is affected a little differently by the allergens I find it is best to try all three over time, and find out which helps you the most.

I hope these tips help you to have a happy vacation and a great summer!

Balancing Moods Naturally

Balanced Mood

As the morning sunlight hits our eyes, we reach across to turn off the alarm clock before it can sing its annoying tune. We then bounce out of bed with enthusiasm and energy to face our day… or do we? For many people, the morning brings a desire to climb under the blankets for a few more hours of sleep. Upon rising, their body complains with stiff or sore muscles; and as far as energy is concerned, that usually comes in the form of several strong cups of coffee. Enthusiasm, joy, creativity and motivation are elements of a happy day; but for many, depression has robbed them of these feelings.

For the most part medical doctors address depression with a group of antidepressant drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft. This type of drug helps to keep serotonin from leaving select areas of the brain where it is needed to regulate moods, sleep, and appetite, among other things. New classes of antidepressants are steadily being developed and brought to market. One of these newer classes, the SNRI’s (serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) like Effexor, work in a similar manor but seem to have less side effects. I have found that although these types of drugs often help in the beginning with depression, after a period of six months or more, they seem to lose their effectiveness and side effects often set in. I am often asked about natural alternatives for lifting depression. When you take a natural approach to healing, the first question you want to ask yourself is why did a symptom manifest itself? In the case of low serotonin levels, why did they get so low? One of the first places to look is stress.

GABA Plus (60 caps)(ko)Stress is a big trouble maker for our health. As our schedules get busier, more demands are put on our systems. In addition to a busy lifestyle, people are often faced with additional stressors such as children leaving the home, family illness, changes in career or relationships and caring for aging parents. As stress builds we begin to feel out of control and irritable, we find we can’t fall asleep at night, and depression or mood swings start to set in. Even if we take a good multi-vitamin and eat a good diet, it would be very hard to get enough of what we need to sustain us through excessively stressful times without additional supplements. In response to the stress, our bodies put out chemicals that help to balance our emotions. GABA (#1823-6) is one of the first to come to the rescue. GABA is an amino acid that is used to make a neurotransmitter (brain chemical) that calms excessive brain activity and promotes a state of greater relaxation and peace. If stress is ongoing and excessive, the body quickly depletes the GABA needed to make this chemical. The resulting low GABA levels will cause one to feel irritable, easily angered, and short tempered. A lack of GABA also causes excessive brain activity such as, lying in bed as our mind races through all the thoughts of the day. This adds to an inability to fall asleep which will add to poor moods. The next chemical to be depleted when under stress is 5HTP (#2806-4) the precursor to serotonin. When serotonin levels become depleted a whole list of symptoms quickly follow: Cravings for carbohydrates (they help to form 5HTP), vague muscle aches and pains, insomnia, depression, binge eating, tension headaches, migraine headaches, PMS headaches, mood swings, body aches, generalized fatigue, joint swellings, numbness and tingling, fibromyalgia, obsessive compulsive behavior and addictions (alcohol, smoking, and stimulants). I can understand the desire at this point to run to the doctor for medications; but before trying a prescription, discuss with him the alternative of first using GABA and 5HTP. See if the underlying cause can be corrected naturally without medications. In addition to these supplements, support stress with B-complex vitamins so that these neurotransmitters do not burn up so quickly. I love the formula Nutri-Calm (#1617-3) which combines B-vitamins and Vitamin C in a base of herbs that support stress and nourish the nervous system.

5-HTP Power (60 caps)Question: Can I take 5HTP with Prozac or other SSRI drugs? It is not recommended to take 5HTP and GABA while on an SSRI anti-depressant drug because the 5HTP will increase your serotonin levels and the anti-depressant causes the serotonin to stay in the brain. An over abundance can quickly build-up. If you would like to replace your anti-depressant drug with 5HTP, talk with your doctor and have him advise you on a program to fade off of the medication. These drugs cannot be stopped suddenly and need to be decreased slowly.

What do we do if we want to get off these types of medications?

Our first step, as I mentioned above, is to support stress with B-complex vitamins and adaptogen herbs like those found in the formula Nutri-Calm. This can be done even while on the medications. Secondly, we will look to the wisdom of Chinese medicine for another alternative to lifting the moods. Mood Elevator TCM (#1035-7) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine herbal blend that relieves sagging chi and disperses stagnant chi. This formula increases something called shen in the body. Chi and shen are poetic descriptive names for the invisible energies which are created in the body when we are healthy and vibrant. When we don’t take care of our health and push our bodies too much, our chi and shen energy gets depleted. Think of this as your life force inside your body. When your life force gets depleted, you will suffer from sagging spirits, lack of motivation and illness. Unlike modern medicine’s approach to depression, which focuses on the neurotransmitter serotonin, Mood Elevator works in a holistic manner to relieve depression and sadness by balancing the liver, digestive, intestinal and nervous system functions. This result is restored vitality and life force energy in the body. Within a few days of trying this formula, I remember the distinct feeling of being in a good mood – “like the birds were singing all around me.” Besides depression, this formula is helpful for sadness, fatigue, insomnia, neurosis, hysteria, hypersensitivity and anxiety. It may be helpful for restless dreams and nightmares and for people who have hypochondriac tendencies. It is amazing the symptoms the body will exhibit when the liver and digestive functions are out of balance –disrupting harmony throughout the body. By restoring balance in the body, moods and a sense of well being increase. Chinese Mood Elevator formula can safely be taken while taking a prescribed anti-depressant. This formula is my choice to help people who want to get off their prescribed anti-depressant drugs. I have had people report very good success by taking one Mood Elevator in the TCM form (concentrate) twice daily for a couple weeks, along with Nutri-Calm to support stress. We would then ask the doctor’s suggestion for reducing the antidepressant dose slowly. Once the medication is decreased in half or more, ask the doctor to retest serotonin levels. If the levels are still low, discuss adding in the 5HTP and/or GABA in place of raising the medication. Often just balancing the body with Mood Elevator will be enough to lift the moods. This is primarily because the depression was caused by poor lifestyle habits more than low serotonin levels.

Another area to consider is the changes in the hormones estrogen and progesterone that women experience monthly. A woman’s monthly menstrual cycle, as well as entering peri-menopause and menopause, are accompanied by ever changing hormone levels. The ups and downs of hormone levels have to be balanced with the help of the liver. Problems arise when high stress, poor diet choices and lack of adequate water and exercise congest the liver and its ability to break down excess hormones each month. To further overload the liver, we are often bombarded with chemicals and toxins in our work place or home environment. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, when the liver gets overloaded and fails to do its job properly, we develop symptoms which include feeling depressed. The first warning signs come when the liver begins to get stressed such as “Flu-like” symptoms, nausea, diarrhea, stiff & aching muscles, cold hands and feet, headaches, gallbladder attacks, tenderness or swelling under the right rib cage, dizziness, puffy eyelids , skin eruptions, difficulty falling asleep (late night energy) followed by difficulty awaking in the morning. If we continue with a high-paced lifestyle and poor diet, the liver becomes more congested resulting in symptoms becoming more chronic in nature; such as chronic fatigue, blood sugar imbalances, hormonal swings, food allergies, immune system weakness, poor bowel elimination, gas and indigestion, feelings of depression and despair. Chinese Mood Elevator is a good choice to support these issues. In addition I would consider adding digestive enzymes with your meals, drastically improving your diet and lifestyle and adding in formulas to either cleanse or strengthen your liver function such as Chinese Liver Balance TCM (#1008-8) or Chinese Blood Build TCM(#1005-9).

Maca (90 caps) (ko)To help balance the female hormones and support stress at the same time consider the herb MACA (#1117-2). Maca is a hearty root vegetable plant which grows in the high Andean plateaus of Peru. Maca contains substantial amounts of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, vitamin B1, B2, B12, C, E, riboflavin, thiamin and ascorbic acid. MACA’s reputed positive effect on hormonal balancing issues such as hot flashes, memory problems, fatigue, mood swings and male impotence A chemical analysis shows the presence of biologically active aromatics which have unique aphrodisiac properties as well. Henry Camponile, M.D., of St. Petersburg, Florida states that his first menopausal patient “started to feel better four days after she began taking Maca”, and finds that it promotes energy unlike any other herb he has used. Dr. Richard Brown, M.D. author of STOP DEPRESSION NOW, says that Maca holds great promise for the health and well being of men and women. Dr.Mark Smith , M.D. has said “I have noticed a significant level of more balanced energy, stamina & endurance markedly during cardio vascular workouts using MACA”. Aguila Calderon, M.D., is the former Dean of the Faculty of Human Medicine at the National University of Federico Villarreal in Lima. He says, “Maca has a lot of easily absorbable calcium, plus magnesium and a fair amount of silica. We are finding it very useful in treating the decalcification of bones in children and adults.” In his practice, Dr. Calderon uses maca for male impotence, erectile dysfunction, menopausal symptoms, and general fatigue. Maca is a wonderful hidden treasure in the herb kingdom as so few people know about the wonderful benefits it supplies.

By approaching depression from the standpoint of improving and balancing your overall health, you will be bouncing out of bed with vigor and enthusiasm in no time at all. Make a decision today to take the steps necessary to take charge of your health and change your destiny.

Love your Heart

Heart Health

The heart is the organ of love. This pear-shaped organ beats continuously throughout life, non-stop. In order to meet the body’s energy demands, the heart must beat more than a 100,000 times per day. It pumps an average of six quarts of blood around your body 500 times per day.

The blood vessels are the transport system by which oxygen and nutrients reach the body’s cells, and waste materials are carried away. In one day, your blood travels nearly 12,000 miles.

According to the National Vital Statistics System, and the U.S. Census Bureau, nine out of ten heart disease patients have at least one risk factor, which include: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, cigarette smoking, overweight and obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity and alcohol use.

There are some life style changes that can make an amazing difference in decreasing the risks of heart disease, for instance: aim for a healthy weight, consume a healthy diet that includes vegetables, fruits, onion, garlic, raw walnuts, salmon, avocado, etc. Drink more water and eat more fiber, cut out salt, exercise regularly like walking. Reduce your stress, stop smoking and get enough sleep. Scientific studies have repeatedly shown that making such life style changes has a tremendous impact in heart disease.

In a 2008 study, researchers noted that each additional hour of sleep was associated with a 33% reduced risk of coronary artery calcification, a predictor of coronary heart disease (Journal of American Medical Association, Dec. 24/31, 2008).

Super Omega-3 EPA (60 softgel caps)You can support your heart and circulatory system with nutritional formulas like Super Omega 3 EPA. This is a combination of Omega-3 fatty acids that are one of four basic fats that the body uses from food. Omega-3s are especially good for the heart. Super Omega-3 EPA is a source of tow fatty acids, EPA and DHA. Another important nutrient is CoQ10-50. CoQ10 is an enzyme that helps produce cellular energy and acts as an antioxidant. It also supports already-normal-range blood pressure levels. Many studies suggest that CoQ10 supports cardiac function. As an antioxidant, Co-Q10 scavenges free radicals, protects cardiac cells and promotes the regeneration of vitamin E, another healthy antioxidant. It can also help maintain already normal blood pressure levels.

Solstic Cardio is another comprehensive nutritional formula in a convenient drink packet, providing 5 grams of l-arginine per serving and a blend of minerals, aminoacids and other ingredients. I personally like this supplement. It is easy to take with you wherever you go. Solstic Cardio helps protect against premature aging, supports healthy sexual function in both men and women, it contributes to more productive exercise, overall energy levels,  healthy immune function, helps maintain cholesterol levels already within the normal range, supports muscle mass and bone density, which may help to reduce fatty tissue, may help increase mental clarity.

Love your heart!

How to Be a Brainiac

brain health

No matter what stage of life you may find yourself in, tending to the brain will prove highly beneficial—all 100 billion neurons of it! This vital conglomerate of nerve cells takes up a mere pinch of body weight (two percent), uses 25 percent of the body’s total oxygen and is responsible for regulating every organ and tissue in the body. Sad thing is, with such responsibilities, brain–related disorders on the rise. So, what can we do to support healthy brain matter and be wise like a Brainiac?—which, by the way, defined as “an exceptionally intelligent person.”

You are what you eat—and this is most clearly reflected by the brain. Most people relate food with physique—“ a moment on your lips, a lifetime on your hips,” but really we need to consider that old television commercial where an egg is violently fried and the narration explains, “this is your brain on drugs.” (Yikes.) So, maybe we could combine the two and come up with: what you put on your tongue, will make you either smart or dumb. (That was off the top of my head, folks!) Getting back to the point, good nutrition is very much related to optimal brain functionality. Also to be noted, food choices made by mothers during pregnancy, lactation and early childhood particularly play a role in a child’s mental development—and yet it also stands on it own: good solid nutrition can improve brain function and reduce risk of brain disorders. This way, if you mother didn’t know any better, you now do.

A serious Brainiac would typically eat plenty of good-for-you fats, high quality protein with vast stores of amino acids and stay plenty hydrated by drinking consistent amounts of water daily. Why? Because (a) the brain is made up of about 70 percent water and quickly succumbs to dehydration, (b) more than half of the “dry” weight of the brain is composed of fat, so it would make sense to feed on what you need on, and (c) amino acids supply the fuel for neurotransmitters to function properly. Protein is especially effective for starting the day right and should be included in everyone’s breakfast. Not only will it increase mental alertness, it will help stabilize blood sugar.

Nutri-Calm (100 tabs)Proper supplementation to offer support would include Fish Oil with DHA to get the omega-3 fatty acids (along with adding cold-water fish into the diet such as anchovies, halibut, mackerel, herring, trout, tuna, and salmon), Flax Seed Oil, NSP’s Super Omega-3 or Super Algae, along with Nutri-Calm, also by NSP, for supplying the much needed B vitamins—and which may lower risks for Alzheimer’s, dementia and cardiovascular disease.

Foundational to any plan is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables (organic when possible) –five to nine servings daily. Not only do they offer rich nutrients, but they help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, which can harm the brain. Studies show these to be two huge factors that excite the aging process. So upping your anti-oxidant quotient via fruits and vegetables or concentrates with high ORAC values (like Thai-Go drink) are excellent lifestyle factors to adopt.

Foods that a Brainiac is just way too smart to eat include the bad fats—anything hydrogenated, deep-fried or highly processed. These are not only the wrong fuel, but cause damage as well. (Two strikes. OUT!) Of course, Brainiacs are probably busy getting some fresh air and exercising to even be tempted by such things—should they hypothetically suffer from mild dehydration and fall prey to bad fat food items. Circulation is another important aspect to brain health and exercising regularly keeps circulation in check–and gets blood to the brain!

Herbs that can help boost circulation to the brain are Ginkgo biloba and Gotu Kola. NSP also combines the two (Ginkgo/Gotu Kola with Bacopa) and offers Mega-Chel, a high-octane combination of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants formulated to aid the body in stripping plaque from artery walls and removing heavy metals.

If there are more specific concerns regarding brain health—such as ADHD, brain fog, anxiety, depression, confusion, nervousness, absent-mindedness, etc. please let the staff at Nature’s Remedy assist you. That’s another point about being a Brainiac—you’re smart enough to ask for help when you need it!

Burdock Root – a Powerful Medicine

Burdock RootBurdock (100 caps) (ko)Burdock root is considered powerful medicine in both Eastern and Western herbal traditions. In the East burdock is considered bitter and cool. It drains dampness and clears excess heat (or toxins) from the body. In the West burdock is traditionally used to cleanse the blood, and is thought to be useful in situations such as:

  • exposure to environmental toxins such as cigarette smoke or air pollution
  • parasites in the blood
  • heavy metals such as mercury, lead or arsenic in the blood
  • chronic bacterial or viral infections, such as chronic fatigue or Lyme disease

The dried root of the burdock species of plants is used to make an herbal remedy known simply as “the burdock”. This remedy is actually made from the dried first year root of the great burdock – botanical name: Arctium lappa L., or from the roots of the common burdock – botanical name: Arctium minus of the plant family Asteraceae found in the temperate regions of the world.

The great burdock is not grown widely in the United States and has been naturalized in many parts of the country while it is found to be growing in the wild in continental Europe – to which it is native. The common burdock is the main source of the root for the preparation of the herbal remedy in America.

It has many medicinal qualities and has been used in many herbal remedies. The root is sweet to the taste and has a gummy consistency. Traditionally, burdock has been used as a remedy for measles, arthritis, tonsillitis, viruses like colds, throat pain, and as a diuretic. In modern times, burdock is also used in oncology and to treat many other serious health problems.

Historically, the seeds of the burdock plants were compressed to make a mixture that was effective in cleansing the bloodstream, easing pain from arthritis, and treating gout, rheumatism, ulcers, acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Its alleged cancer-treating properties were also utilized in Russia and India. The Chinese used it as an aphrodisiac, and found it effective in treating barrenness and impotence.

Burdock’s active ingredients are arcigen, calcium, chlorogenic acid, essential oil, flavonoids, iron, inulin (a carbohydrate), lactone, mucilage, polyacetylenes, potassium, resin, tannin, and taraxosterol. The seeds of the plant contain beneficial fatty acids. The oil from the seeds can be used as a diaphoretic, which increases perspiration, which is essential in cleansing the body of toxins or harmful elements. According to traditional healers, diaphoretics are essential to treating influenza, gallbladder or liver disorders, and to aid the kidneys. Burdock is a favorite among herbalists to treat acne. It has been used to clear skin redness and blemishes.

In Japan and some parts of Europe, burdock is eaten as vegetable. Burdock contains inulin, a natural dietary fiber, and has also been used traditionally to improve digestion. In fact, recent studies confirm that burdock has prebiotic properties that could improve health. It has many nutrients like iron, and beneficial oils. Also, burdock can be used as a gentle laxative and help eradicate uric acid. Some of the active ingredients of burdock are polyacetylenes, which are known to be effective antibacterials and antifungals. Burdock may enhance the performance of many of the organs, which purify the body and eliminate toxins or waste (like the kidneys, liver, colon, etc). This may help with overall health and helps correct disorders.

Despite the fact that burdock has been used for centuries to treat a variety of conditions, very few scientific studies have examined burdock’s effects. It has been applied externally as well as internally to relieve eczema and psoriasis.

Burdock root oil extract, also called Bur oil, is popular in Europe as a scalp treatment applied to improve hair strength, shine and body, help reverse scalp conditions such as dandruff, and combat hair loss. Modern studies indicate that burdock root oil extract is rich in phytosterols and essential fatty acids (including rare long-chain EFAs), the nutrients required to maintain a healthy scalp and promote natural hair growth. It combines an immediate relieving effect with nutritional support of normal functions of sebaceous glands and hair follicles According to some European herbalists, combining burdock root oil with a nettle root oil and massaging these two oils into the scalp every day has a greater effect than Bur oil alone.

Burdock leaves are used by some burn care workers for pain management and to speed healing time in natural burn treatment. Burn care workers hold that it eases dressing changes and appears to impede bacterial growth on the wound site and that it also provides a great moisture barrier.

Pregnant or nursing women should avoid burdock as it may cause damage to the fetus.

If you are sensitive to daises, chrysanthemums, or ragweed, you may also experience an allergic reaction to burdock.
